One of the things I like about what I do is the wide variety of people I work with. Every day I have the privilege of working with talented and motivated people in a wide range of industries.
In just the last year, I have talked with entrepreneurs who believe they have a shot at contributing significant changes to:
- Primary Education
- Health care (two different people)
- The Paving Industry
- Fundraising (two different people)
Each one in their own way has ideas that are good coupled with a lot of enthusiasm …
Like so many things in life this is a two edged sword. On the one hand, the definition of an entrepreneur is that they are willing to take a risk and put themselves out there to make something happen.
Most people are simply not willing to risk their ego let alone their money, energy and time to ideas so audacious.
Are any of these ideas good enough to actually change an industry? Who knows? It has to be a long shot for so many reasons, but (and this is what I think entrepreneurs intrinsically understand) even if they don’t succeed in the audacious goal of transforming an industry, my bet is that in each case they will come out the other side with more opportunity than when they started.
They may have less money; they may have to rebuild their ego, their energy and their enthusiasm, but they will have made some great connections and they will have learned a lot.
But maybe most important, they will have had a lot of fun. They will have found and fed their energy and motivation.
And just maybe, they will end up transforming an industry.
It makes me wonder if I am thinking big enough, how about you?
The point:
- Big challenges can bring out the best in us.
